-Portuguese CUISINE –
What is the typical Portuguese cuisine?
Portuguese cuisine originates from the mild Mediterranean-oceanic climate. It mainly consumes fish, seafood, meat dishes, eggs and sheep and goat cheeses. Vegetables are used as an accompaniment to soups or stews. In contrast, not much flour and dairy dishes are eaten. Even Portuguese desserts and sweet treats contain little flour, and are instead made with a variety of fillings. Portugal is famous for its wine production, which is drunk in large quantities. Portugal’s flagship dish is dried cod, which is used to make a myriad of dishes such as croquettes, meatballs, stews, soups and fish in batter. Cheese, sausages and grilled sardines are typical appetizers, and the classic Portuguese sandwich consists of a baked roll with meat served with a fried egg and tomato sauce.
