-GERMAN CUISINE –
What is the typical German cuisine?
German cuisine is considered one of the less healthy cuisines in the world. Sausage, pork knuckle, bacon, potatoes, cabbage and beer are the products most associated with it. However, not everyone knows that German cuisine also includes amazing baked goods and desserts. German cuisine may seem uninteresting, greasy and hard to digest. However, it is worth knowing that it is steadily becoming more diverse. This is primarily due to the influence of its neighbors. Germans are borrowing some dishes from Switzerland, France, Italy and even Poland. At the same time, they are not forgetting their traditions. In the western part of Germany, the cuisine is lighter and richer in vegetables. In the south, they eat fatty food, and meat dishes consisting mainly of pork, game or poultry – especially chicken – dominate the plates. Germans are famous for their excellent roasts, but they also like raw meats – tagine or tartare. They are also famous for more than a thousand varieties of sausage, which reigns supreme on their tables served with mustard and horseradish. Among the most popular vegetables are potatoes, prepared and eaten in any form, and cabbage. In addition, in Germany we will eat asparagus, green peas and lentils. Flour dishes, such as dumplings and pancakes, are also a feature of German cuisine. Bakeries offer as many as 300 types of bread, pretzels, cottage cheese donuts, rolls or croissants.
