-Estonian CUISINE –
What is the typical Estonian cuisine?
Estonian cuisine is firmly rooted in the traditions and culture that lead the country. It is based mainly on pork, fish, vegetables, potatoes and dairy products. It has also been influenced by other countries, including Lithuania, Russia, Latvia and Germany and Sweden. Estonian cuisine is based on grain products, so it is not surprising that bread, mainly sourdough rye or coarse wheat bread, is added to almost every dish. Groats are also popular, such as barley groats served with main dishes, or dessert semolina cooked with cranberry juice and poured over milk. Anyway, milk, along with beer, is particularly prized by Estonians. Typical Estonian dishes include barley pudding and Baltic herring. Also unique is „pudding,” sült (pork jelly) and kama (groats with peas and sour milk).
