What is the typical Austrian cuisine?
Austrian cuisine is the typical cuisine of cold mountain regions, where food must be nutritious and filling. It is a rather heavy cuisine, based on meat and flour dishes. Dinner dishes, soups or desserts were often borrowed from the cuisine of neighboring countries or those that were part of the Habsburg Empire. Typical Austrian delicacies include meat dishes such as the famous Wiener schnitzel or fiakra stew. There are also vegetable soups on meat and dumplings in various varieties, sweet and salty. Viennese cuisine abounds in sweets, cakes and pies. The most famous desserts are Sacher cake, apfelstrudel, cheese strudel, Linz cake, or sweet dishes like imperial omelet or dumplings with apricots. Then there’s the famous Viennese coffee.
